Unit 35 – Undertake Technical Adjustments of Images

Describe the process of adjusting images using Photoshop and InkScape

What do we mean by technical adjustments? What techniques have you learned in Photoshop and InkScape to make your pictures look different? Discuss sizing, layers, filters, re-colouring, cutting, masking, etc.

• Explain the principles of colour theory, colour mode and colour management
• Explain the importance of technical compatibility in images with specified requirements
• Explain the effect of image pixel dimensions, resolution and bit depth on file size
• Explain the importance of having accurate technical and descriptive metadata
• Identify the relative merits of appropriate equipment, software, methods and material for different imaging requirements
• Explain the reasons for using different file formats for digital images, identifying the differences between them
• Agree with relevant parties the image editing workflow and procedures
• Select the most suitable hardware and software for the image editing
• Retrieve all relevant material from image sources as required
• Import retrieved images into the editing software
• Check the visual and technical compatibility of the elements to be combined in the editing process
• Identify how to treat incompatible elements, following workplace procedures and relevant guidelines
• Produce appropriate edited images to meet all the clients requirements and workplace standards
• Produce preliminary proofs, discussing and agreeing any further editing with the client
• Liaise with colleagues and / or clients as necessary to resolve any identified problems
• Carry out any further editing to produce final image files
• Append image metadata in accordance with workplace systems and copyright legislation
• Save the edited image files in the correct file format ready for outputting or storage
• Identify key aspects of legislation relevant to technical adjustments of images
• Identify relevant aspects of health and safety legislation
• Take appropriate action to minimise potential risks and hazards
• Identify aspects of codes of ethics / conduct relevant to technical adjustments of images
• Recognise any potential legal issues arising from the nature of the images to be produced
• Attribute intellectual property and copyright credits in accordance with copyright legislation
• Maintain the confidentiality of photographic materials as required
• Comply with all business / organisation systems and procedures
